On Wed. July 31st and Thur. August 1st, Broward County Public School (BCPS) Food and Nutrition Services opened its cafeteria doors to members of the media and cafeteria managers for its ‘Show, Tell and Taste – What’s on the Menu?’ event. ‘Show, Tell and Taste’ gave media and others a sneak peek opportunity to taste test the new school lunch menu items for the upcoming school year.
Many of the new menu items were directly chosen by students as a result of the annual Student Food Show that took place in January 2019. At the Student Food Show, approx. 200 students from Watkins Elementary School and Nova Middle School tasted potential menu items and instantly rated them on tablets at each food station. The Student Food Show’s fan-favorite food items that have been introduced to next year’s menu across the district include Macaroni & Cheese in a Cornbread Bowl; Meatloaf with Gravy and Mashed Potatoes; Fish Sticks with Tartar Sauce; No Nut Butter with Smart Cookies; and Lemongrass Chicken.
Additionally, BCPSFNS will offer even more vegetarian and vegan options for the new school year, including Vegan Chik’n Nugget Salad; Vegan Sunbutter & Grape Jelly Sandwich; and Vegan Bean & Green Chili Burrito. Also on the new menu is Southwest Chicken in a Cornbread Bowl – a recipe created by BCPS Food & Nutrition Services’ in-house chef, Jason Port.
