She Lives in Daydreams with Me

Art & Story

“Love is patient, love is kind.” – Mary Lambert’s “She Keeps me Warm”

One of my earliest memories, only a few years after my grandfather first introduced me to the magic of crayons and paper, is of making up stories from songs on my family’s radio. While I now prefer watercolor and colored pencils, music and storytelling are equally important to my practice.

One of my favorite artworks that began with a song is an artist book entitled She Lives in Daydreams with Me (2023), featured in my senior exhibition of the same name. The book is inspired by Mary Lambert’s “She Keeps Me Warm” and the fan story “Strangers on a Train” by FangirlingIsMyJam. Each page features illustrations of sapphic love with visual hints to queer history and floriography. (Image 2, labelled Book Page_Violet) features violets, a reference to the poet Sappho, the origin for the terms ‘lesbian’ and ‘sapphic’.

I wrote the story for She Lives in Daydreams with Me (2023) on a summer night in bed while listening to Lambert’s song. The first draft filled two pages of my journal, words overlapped with scribbles and strikethroughs. My writing process reflects my paintings, written and rewritten across several pages with notes for future projects along the margins. Through painting, I bring the visuals from that first summer night to life.

She Lives in Daydreams with Me (2023) portrays my character Olive’s (curly brown hair) journey in finding a safe space with her girlfriend, Rosaria (black hair), away from the chaos of the world. The story and illustrations reference my childhood bedroom, “the toybox of anxiety” and a hidden diary of daydreams. For each moment of chaos, Rosaria is patient and provides soft new memories depicted across each book page.
