Tell me if you've heard this one.
"It's not ideal..but we have Facetime, Skype and Zoom dates for the kids to do."
I think we can all agree these modern marvels make the times we are going through much easier than if this were pre internet days.
But when you hear this line it's said with a sense of melancholy not excitement. Is this the new norm? No human interaction ever again! I’m here to say the the answer to that question is...no.
Yes of course everyday interactions kids have with their friends has changed for now but the opportunity to create experiences has not. Having been in the family experience game for over 10 years as a performer and producer the thing I’ve always focused on is creating special moments in any situation. Those special moments lead to lasting and worthwhile memories for kids.
So here are some memory making ideas during these social distancing times.
*Game Night: Dust off the old board games in the closet and play a game or two. (In fact...we we have life size games you can rent!) For added fun spread the board game on large table and let kids call out their moves from a proper distance before they move their pieces.
- Art Walk: Invite a small group of kids together to place on the block and outline a large animal or character in the street in chalk. Then they can then fill in the picture from a social distance from each other. Great way to work on something communally.
- Dance Challenge: Pick a Dance from off of YouTube and break up into groups of three or four. Pick a date And time to meet in a backyard or open space for a dance challenge. Get dressed up, create names for your group and get your dance on. Don’t forget to film it!
- Silly Olympics: The ultimate sport competition surrounded by silliness. Create challenges like best dog impressionist, fastest backwards walker, and who can hop on one foot the longest. Give out medals at the end while never forgetting the air high fives!
Memories are being made all the time, and with a little help you can make these difficult times into ones they will remember with a smile.
