Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Nope— it’s a flying squirrel! This year, Disney+ has released a family-friendly movie about a mighty squirrel named Ulysses. The live-action film was based on a book by Kate DiCamillo, and both are titled Flora & Ulysses.
The movie portrays the tale of a young girl named Flora who adores comic books and wishes superheroes existed. Her wish comes true when she encounters a very special squirrel. The squirrel is believed to have been given powers after it was accidentally sucked up by a runaway vacuum. Furthermore, the creature is able to type out words and fly. Flora names the talented squirrel Ulysses.
Throughout the movie, there are a lot of conflicts and rising tensions. While Flora solves family issues, befriends a disabled child, and proves that Ulysses has powers, a pest control officer is hunting the squirrel down. The movie is exciting and mostly realistic fiction, except for the gifted squirrel.
In my opinion, the movie was well plotted and the actors were superb. I enjoyed watching it; I laughed, gasped, and applauded. Some lessons the film portrays are that family and friends are important in our lives, we should try to view situations from others’ perspectives, and heroes —not just super— can come from anywhere. I haven’t read the book yet, so I can’t really compare the film to the book. However, if you have read the book by Kate DiCamillo, and you enjoyed it, I recommend watching the movie. Then, you can decide on which is better. Going back to the movie, something I found interesting about the casting was that some of the characters are played by lead actors in DuckTales (2017), a Disney television series that was recently concluded. This is significant because comic books take a big part of the movie; likewise, DuckTales (2017) is a reboot of DuckTales (1987), which started off as comics. I just find it all so fascinating. I’m not sure if the casting of those specific actors was a coincidence or not, but, either way, I enjoyed the film.
I recommend the Disney+ film Flora & Ulysses to those who like comic books, comedy, adventure, animals, and the book by Kate DiCamillo.
