Junior Reporter: A Tale of Magic…

By Mariana March 29, 2021

Have you read the bestselling series The Land of Stories by Chris Colfer? A Tale of Magic… by the same author provides a background story to some of the characters in the Land of Stories.

A Tale of Magic… presents people—mostly children—with magical abilities who are not accepted in their society because of their skill. This includes Brystal Evergreen, the protagonist of the story. In the kingdoms throughout the setting of the book, magic was illegal and forbidden. However, an evident character, Madame Weatherberry, convinced the ruler of a kingdom to allow her to begin an academy of magic. With her plan, she chose a handful of students capable of magic to attend her academy. For those familiar with The Land of Stories, among these students were Skylene, Tangerina, Xanthous, and Emerelda. Do their names sound familiar? Brystal Evergreen and Lucy Goose, who may not sound as familiar, were one of the few selected as well. The fairies, as they were titled, were taught lessons on their magical abilities. They practiced and trained together, befriending one another. As the plot rises and suspense builds, eventually, the book has a thrilling plot twist. With this plot twist, the main characters solve the conflict of the story and end the tale.

In my opinion, A Tale of Magic… was written brilliantly; every paragraph has exciting details that made me want to read more and more. However, the book has statements and beliefs that I do not agree with. In spite of this, I enjoyed the story. Some lessons A Tale of Magic… portrays are that certain differences shouldn’t be unacceptable rather tolerated, holding hatred is never a good thing, and we should be compassionate companions to all.

I recommend A Tale of Magic… to whoever likes fantasy, fairy tales, mythical creatures, and The Land of Stories book series. Thank you for reading this article. This is Junior Reporter Mariana B., signing off.
